Instead of asking them if they’re pro-life, ask them when they think human life begins. If they say anything other than conception (or biological beginning), they’re not really pro-life. And if they say conception, then ask them what they plan on doing to protect life at conception, as well as what they’ve done up until this point. If they’ve got no answer to protecting life at conception, or they have exceptions other than when another life is at stake, they’re not really pro-life. They may be anti-abortion, as in they oppose abortion on demand as a barbaric practice, but they’re not really pro-life.

And I can promise you this: a candidate who won’t protect the God-given right to life won’t protect any of your other God-given rights, either.

So always start here. Life is more than a litmus test, but a window to the soul. If they fail here, there’s no point in continuing the conversation.
